Pre-Emergent Is Different from Existing-Weed Control
Pre-emergent products target susceptible weeds during germination or early establishment. They do not remove an established weed population. Hand removal and other suitable methods may still be needed before treatment. Perennial weeds that spread from roots may require a different approach.
Formulations and Labels Matter
Preen is a product brand, not one universal formulation. Active ingredients, approved uses, timing and restrictions vary by product. Read the label for the exact container being used; do not assume a product suitable for an ornamental bed is suitable for a vegetable garden, newly seeded lawn or every established plant.
People, Pets and Environmental Precautions
An herbicide is not automatically safe for families, pets or the environment because it is pre-emergent or sold for residential use. Follow all label instructions for protective equipment, application rate, watering, re-entry and storage. Keep products away from children and animals, and observe precautions around water, runoff and desirable plants.
Plan Bed Maintenance Around the Site
Review existing weeds, plant species, bed edges, mulch depth, irrigation and drainage before selecting a treatment. Mulch and routine hand weeding can be part of the plan, but neither makes a bed maintenance-free. Application timing and any repeat treatment must follow the selected product's label rather than a fixed calendar date.
